Dog Ate Oleander: Cardiac Glycoside & Arrhythmia Triage
Dogs CANNOT ingest any portion of an Oleander plant, including dried leaves, flowers, or water from a vase. Oleander contains potent cardiac glycosides that disrupt cardiac conduction, causing fatal heart arrest.
Toxic Mechanism & Agent
Toxic Agent: Cardiac Glycosides (Oleandrin and Neriine)
Mechanism of Action: Inhibits myocardial Na+/K+ ATPase pumps, causing profound intracellular calcium overload, severe hyperkalemia, and life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias or heart block.
Figure 1: Botanical specimen of toxic Nerium oleander. Fresh flowering stems exude cardenolide-rich milky latex sap; all parts of the plant retain lethal potency even when dried or wilted.
Clinical Signs & Timeline
Onset Time: Rapid onset; within 30 minutes to 2 hours of ingestion.
Primary Symptoms: Severe drooling, vomiting, extreme abdominal pain, cold extremities, severe bradycardia or ventricular tachycardia, heart block, collapse, sudden death.
Emergency Triage Protocol
IMMEDIATE ER VISIT
Continuous ECG telemetry is mandatory. Treatment includes IV fluid therapy (without calcium), atropine for severe bradycardia, anti-arrhythmics (lidocaine), and Digoxin-specific Fab antibody fragments (DigiFab) in life-threatening cases.
Figure 2: Cardiac telemetry and antiarrhythmic therapy. Real-time Lead II ECG tracing reveals severe bradycardia and ventricular premature complexes (VPCs) caused by oleander-induced Na+/K+ ATPase inhibition.
Strict Rule S1 Warning
NEVER induce vomiting at home using hydrogen peroxide without direct instruction from a DVM. Inappropriate emesis can cause fatal aspiration pneumonia, esophageal chemical burns, or gastric rupture. Always seek professional veterinary diagnosis.
